Toddler Storytime - September 5, 2008

Sunday, September 7 is Grandparent’s Day. Today, we celebrated our grandparents with these books:

The Grandma Book by Todd Parr

The Grandpa Book by Todd Parr

No Kiss for Grandpa by Harriet Ziefert

What Grandma’s Can’t Do by Douglas Wood

Spot Visits His Grandparents by Eric Hill

And we also sang and played:

Someone Is Knocking

Someone is knocking, one, two, three: (Give three knocks)

Someone is knocking, who can it be?

Who has come to call upon me? (Motion of opening door)

Why, good morning, Grandmama; (Motion of shaking hands)

I didn’t know you were in town!

What a lovely, lovely gown! (Hands spread apart)

Here’s a chair. Won’t you sit down? (Indicate a chair)

I’m glad you came to call upon me.

Will you have a cup of tea? (Extend one cupped hand)

Grandma’s Spectacles

Here are Grandma’s spectacles (Make circles with thumbs and index fingers, place over eyes)

Here is Grandma’s hat; (Join hands at finger tips and place on top of head)

And here’s the way she folds her hands (Fold hands and place gently in lap)

And puts them in her lap.

Here are Grandpa’s spectacles, (Make larger circles with thumbs and index fingers and place over eyes)

Here is Grandpa’s hat. (Make larger pointed hat, as above)

And here’s the way he folds his arms (Fold arms with vigor)

And sits like that.

(Use real glasses and hat as alternative)

Grandma’s Coming

(tune: “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”)

Grandma’s coming soon to visit, yes, she is.

Grandma’s coming soon to visit, yes, she is.

Grandma’s coming soon to visit,

Yes, she’s coming soon to visit

Grandma’s coming soon to visit, yes, she is.

(Additional verses: She’ll be driving a new car when she comes; She’ll be flying in an airplane when she comes; Oh, we’ll be so glad to see her when she comes. Repeat the song, substituting Grandpa for Grandma)

If I Was a Grandpa

If I was a grandpa,
My beard would grow,
From my chin (touch chin)
To my toes. (touch toes)
If I was a grandpa
My mustache would veer
Around my cheeks (trace cheeks)
And behind my ears! (tickle behind ears)

Do It For Grandma Song

(tune: "Did You Ever See a Lassie")
Let's clap our hands for Grandma,
for Grandma, for Grandma,
Let's clap our hands for grandma,
Let's clap them this way.
Clap this way and that way,
Clap this way and that way,
Let's clap our hands for Grandma
Let's clap them this way.

Have the children do the proper actions. Use these other actions also:
Let's stomp our feet, Let's nod our heads, etc.

Hello Grandpa, Hello Grandma
(tune: “Frére Jacques”)
Hello, Grandpa
Hello, Grandpa
How do you do?
How do you do?
You are very special.
You are very special.
I love you.
I love you.

Hello, Grandma
Hello, Grandma
How do you do?
How do you do?
You are very special.
You are very special.
I love you.
I love you.

This Old Man

This old man, he played one

He played knick-knack on my thumb

With a knick-knack, paddy-wack

Give the dog a bone

This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played two

He played knick-knack on my shoe

With a knick-knack, paddy-wack

Give the dog a bone

This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played three

He played knick-knack on my knee

With a knick-knack, paddy-wack

Give the dog a bone

This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played four

He played knick-knack on my floor

With a knick-knack, paddy-wack

Give the dog a bone

This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played five

He played knick-knack on my side

With a knick-knack, paddy-wack

Give the dog a bone

This old man came rolling home.

There Was a Crooked Man

There was a crooked man, and he went a crooked mile,
And found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile,
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

Grandparents

Grandparents are meant for kisses and hugs,
For watching rainbows and catching bugs.
For baking all of your favorite things,
For books to read and songs to sing.
