Toddler Storytime - August 8, 2008

This week we read stories about farms!
We read:
Hello, day! by Anita Lobel
Peek-a-moo! by Marie Cimarusti
Spots, feathers, and curly tails by Nancy Tafuri
Barnyard dance! by Sandra Boynton
And we sang these songs:

In the Farmyard

In the farmyard at the end of the day,

Listen to what the animals say.

The cow says, "Moo,"

The pigeon, "Coo."

The sheep says, "Baa,"

The lamb says, "Maa."

The hen, "Cluck, cluck,"

"Quack," says the duck.

The dog, "Bow-wow,"

The cat, "Meow."

The horse, "Neigh,"

The pig grunts, "Oink."

Then the barn is closed up tight,

And the farmer says, "Goodnight."

Billy the Bull

Billy the bull has two horns.

Billy the bull has two horns.

Billy the bull has two horns.

Charge, Billy, charge!

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Billy the bull has one horn.

Billy the bull has one horn.

Billy the bull has one horn.

Charge, Billy, charge!

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Billy the bull has no horns.

Billy the bull has no horns.

Silly Billy you’re just a cow.

So moo, Billy, moo.

Mrs. Hen

Chook, chook, chook, chook, chook,

Good Morning Mrs. Hen,

How many chickens have you got?

Madam, I've got ten.

Four of them are yellow.

And four of them are brown,

And two of them are speckled red,

The nicest in the town.

Here Is the Barn

Here is the barn (form a roof shape with your hands)

Where I like to go (walk in place)

It's as tall as a tree (point up overhead)

And cozy, you know (hug body with arms)

Here is the barn, (make a roof shape with your hands)

I'll go there with you (walk in place)

To pet a sweet lamb (pretend to pet a lamb)

And cuddle it, too! (pretend to hug a lamb)

Over in the Barnyard

(tune: “Down by the Station”)

Over in the barnyard,

Early in the morning,

See the little baby chicks,

All in a row, (hold up five fingers of one hand and wiggle them)

See the busy farmer,

Scattering their breakfast, (scatter chicken feed with other hand)

Peck, peck, (hold your four fingers together and place your thumb below to form a beak and make pecking motions)

Cheep, cheep (open and close your beak)

Off they go!

Farm Sounds

(tune: "Wheels on the bus")

The cow in barn goes moo, moo, moo,

Moo, moo, moo. Moo, moo, moo,

The cow in barn goes moo, moo, moo,

Moo, moo, moo. Moo, moo, moo,

All around the farm.

The pig in the pen goes oink, oink, oink…

The hens in the coop go cluck…

The lambs on the hill go baa…

The ducks on the pond go quack…

Farm Chores

(tune: “Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush”)

This is the way we mow the hay

Mow the hay, mow the hay

This is the way we mow the hay

So early in the morning.

This is the way we feed the chicks…

This is the way we pull the weeds…

This is the way we hoe the field…

Hickety, Pickety, My Black Hen

Hickety, pickety, my black hen,

She lays eggs for gentlemen.

Sometimes nine,

Sometimes ten,

Hickety, pickety, my black hen.

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn!

The sheep’s in the meadow!

The cow’s in the corn!

Where is the little boy who looks after the sheep?

He’s under the haystack, fast asleep.

Will you wake him? No, not I.

For if I do, he will surely cry.
Five and Five Eggs
Five and five eggs (hold up hands)
That makes ten
Sitting on top is mother hen (fold one hand over the other)
Crackle crackle crackle (clap hands three times)
What do I see (fingers around eyes)
Ten fluffy chickens
As yellow as can be (hold up ten fingers)

Two Mother Pigs

Two mother pigs lived in a pen (show thumbs)

Each had four babies, and that made ten (show fingers and thumbs)

These four babies were black as night (hold up hand, extend fingers, thumb in palm)

These four babies were black and white (hold up other hand, thumb in palm)

But all eight babies loved to play

And they rolled and rolled in the mud all day. (roll hands)

At night, with their mother, they curled up in a heap, (make fists, palms up)

And squealed and squealed till they went to sleep.
